Throughout the Christian history the Devil has been used as the glue to keep seemingly paradoxical aspects of the faith together.
The book of Job is tough for people who paint the devil as an oppositional force. Others can't wrap their heads around a jealous god who allows for an evil micro-manager to corrupt humans knowing of our infinite suffering to occur in hell.
Either way you slice it this extra-biblical bogeyman trickster-god meme has been snowballing and accreting so much baggage that the whole construct and its loose agglomeration of tenets seems ready to disintegrate upon casual examination.
Might it be time for Christians to admit what the Jews already believe, that their 'wholly good' god is an A-hole sometimes?
