Should Hindus Study Hinduism?

The average American of Hindu origin doesn't feel the need to study Hinduism in school, apparently, which is interesting to me, because most of the Abrahamic faith realize the need for seminary or other equivalencies to fully grok or learn apologetics or how to debate the faith.

The american reductivism and over-simplification of Hinduism, much like the truncated Egyptology or Kemetism we are exposed to, doesn't do the religion justice, and indeed seems to miss the core of the teaching.

Most are unaware that the term 'Hindu' is actually a geographic distinction, and the mythos attached to the term are the native tales and archetypal beliefs of the land that do not have a founding figure or establishing prophet.

Do people who self-identify as a follower of a faith do it a disservice by not learning the intricacies of it?
